Free Guy

Wednesday’s Weekly Write-Up:

Free Guy on Disney +

Overall, the movie was enjoyable and I did laugh out loud at times. The humor often had sexual undertones (if not overt) and there was a great deal of violence; so, for conservative parents it is most likely not appropriate for children under 16 even though it is now on Disney Plus.

As far as the basic storyline goes, it’s as decent as a movie about a video game can be.  Reminiscent of The Truman Show and Tron, the story tackles the questions of artificial intelligence, fake worlds, computer programming/gaming, and our society’s insatiable need to be entertained.  As well as the topic of corporate greed and the theft of ideas and property of the individual by the wealthy and powerful. There is also a love story angle which I found to be quite endearing though predictable.

Ryan Reynolds is at his comedic best in the main character role of Guy, an NPC in the game who becomes the first AI with his unique programming triggered by his one true love, Millie/Molotovgirl, played by Jodie Comer.  I found Taika Waititi’s portrayal of the villain, Antwan, over-the-top and excessively unbelievable. Every scene with Antwan broke the proverbial story-bubble and forced me out of the movie and into my own world. I couldn’t wait for his scenes to end.

Contrasting with the unbearable character of Antwan, are the supporting characters of Keys and Mouser (played by Joe Keery & Utkarsh Ambudkar respectively) who not only made me laugh, but were completely believable. Well done gentlemen.

My love of Star Wars and the Marvel Universe being what it is, my favorite scene in the movie was towards the end when these great stories are visually referenced. I don’t want to give away how for those who have not yet seen the film. My loudest laugh was during this scene. I know, I know…it was a shameful plug for Disney’s cinematic prowess. I loved it anyway.

If you are looking for a lighthearted movie in which you can escape for a couple of hours and not use your brain too much, this is worth watching.
